These are three products that happen to make coffee. The ranked lists keep them apart so a capsule machine cannot win “best value espresso” by being inexpensive.
Semi-automatic, with the grinder in the same box. The US BES870XL booklet is the source for the conical grinder, 54 mm portafilter, thermocoil, PID, pressure gauge, and 2 L tank. You still distribute, tamp, and steam.
Super-automatic. You fill beans and water. The EP3221/40 leaflet lists a removable brew group, 12 grind settings, a 1.8 L tank, and a classic milk frother. There is no portafilter for you to hold.
Pod. The specs on this row are unverified and the type is capsule. It sits on the pod list only. Beginner Friendly is high because the steps are gone, not because the espresso-quality score is high.
Manual is the fourth path: you supply the pressure. Flair’s November 2025 guide is the source for the 58 mm basket, the gauge, the preheat controller, and the $685 MSRP. There is no boiler and no steam wand.
